About this artwork
The painting, titled Decibel, is a 49” x 37” mixed-media work by contemporary artist Kris Gebhardt.
Decibel features an abstract head split into two starkly contrasting halves of black and white, likely representing dualities such as good and bad or light and dark. A distinctive rust-colored blotch occupies the area where an ear might be, perhaps symbolizing the artist’s partial hearing loss. This autobiographical element adds a personal touch,… as Gebhardt’s hearing impairment is widely attributed to his time spent on three rock-and-roll tours with singer-songwriter John Mellencamp. Gebhardt worked closely with Mellencamp as a personal trainer and companion during world tours, following the Grammy-winning singer’s heart attack.
Gebhardt often jokes about his hearing loss, quipping, “That’s the side my wife sits on,” revealing his humorous take on this personal challenge.
