About this artwork
Delicate purple irises rise gracefully, their petals rendered in soft, fluid brushstrokes that speak of quiet elegance. Nestled gently on a leaf, a tiny red ladybug adds a playful moment to the stillness — a reminder that even in serenity, life stirs.
Painted in the classical East Asian tradition, Iris and the Ladybug celebrates the harmony between flora and fauna. The gentle gradients of ink and washes of color evoke a timeless calm — ideal for… contemplative interiors and lovers of subtle natural beauty.
Created with authentic materials — handmade Xuan rice paper, mineral pigments, and ink — the work follows the traditions of Chinese and Japanese painting. Because Xuan paper is delicate, I carefully mount each painting onto an additional layer of paper, a time-honored practice that preserves colors, prevents wrinkling, and prepares the piece for display.
Kseniya Dueva, born in Moldova and trained in both pharmacy and traditional Chinese painting, works primarily with ink and brush on Xuan paper. Her technique fuses the expressive “free brush” (xieyi) style with minimalism and abstract influences, focusing on powerful lines, the interplay of ink and pigment, and the poetic use of empty space. Through her paintings, she evokes a deep sense of presence, stillness, and fleeting beauty—inviting viewers into a silent yet vibrant dialogue with nature and the spirit of each subject.
