About this artwork
“Je suis Charlie” is part of a series of four oil paintings in which Marianne figures embody the different stages of national mourning.
In this work, Marianne takes on the features of a contemporary young woman, proud and insolent, at once vulnerable and determined. Draped in blue, white, and red, she stands upright in front of the former offices of the Charlie Hebdo newspaper, whose current facade is faithfully represented.
Behind her, the commemorative… fresco and a bouquet of flowers commemorate the victims of the attack of January 7, 2015.
The jewelry she wears—a hanging pencil, an Eiffel Tower, a broken chain—are all symbols of freedom of expression, wounded memory, and resistance.
This portrait brings together the gravity of the place and the aplomb of youth, like a living tribute to irreverence, courage and free speech.
Léni Whitford, a former nurse, uses watercolor for small pieces and oil paint for large formats. She masters the realistic, figurative style; her work is marked by colorful contrast, multiple glazes, and meticulous details. Her creations, often supported by female figures, defend causes, criticize current events, or tell stories, all revealed through a balanced chromatic harmony. Her works concentrate vivid emotions, seeking to transcend their framework.
