About this artwork
The artist used a layering process to give dimension to the canvas. She first applied a layer of sheet-rock mud, using a scraper to move the mud around haphazardly. Then she added paper collage and finally paint and charcoal. The effect is colorful, sculptural and exciting.

Langley Tolbert is a modern-day abstract expressionist based in Georgia. Her work is influenced by such icons of the genre as Franz Kline and Joan Mitchell. As an intuitive artist, Tolbert composes a painting as she paints it, letting her instincts tell her when it is finished. Working mainly in acrylics, she often enhances her paintings with collage, texturing medium, ink and pastels. She says she never runs out of things to try.
