About this artwork
In Continuum, the final work of the Gravity of Colors trilogy, the process reaches its point of sedimentation. Having survived the initial suspension of Momentum and the vertical fall of Strata, the matter finally settles and densifies at the base of the cycle.
The composition returns to a horizontal orientation, but the energy has transformed. The sweeping strokes are now heavy and layered, representing the accumulation of time and experience. Vibrant… teal, copper, and deep red pigments appear "pressed" into the dark ground, suggesting that the color has become a permanent trace or memory.
The texture is at its most tactile here; the impasto is thick and gritty, absorbing light rather than reflecting it. In Continuum, I conclude the irreversible process of the trilogy, showing matter that has fully accepted its own weight and found a profound, silent strength in its final resting state.
Laura Buruiana is a multidisciplinary artist and acclaimed concert cellist of Romanian origin, now based in France, who channels her rich musical background onto canvas. Her technique weaves impasto layers, rhythmic scraping, and chromatic counterpoint, using brushes, palette knives, and unconventional tools to create tactile, sculptural paintings that evoke musical structures and resonances. Her style balances lyricism with rigor, translucency with depth, and the spontaneous gesture with disciplined composition. Buruiana’s paintings powerfully convey a profound emotional density—transforming the fleeting intimacy of sound into a permanent, visual “resonance” filled with both movement and silence.
