About this artwork
The canvas depicts a black-headed sheep, but far from traditional realism, the work ventures towards a freer, almost abstract interpretation. The sheep gradually emerges from the surface of the canvas thanks to remarkable work on materials and textures, which give the whole a striking tactile and visual depth.
The black head of the sheep, the real focal point of the work, is made with dark and dense, almost velvety flat tints, contrasting strongly… with the rest of the body.
The whole is an invitation to contemplation: a work that transcends the traditional subject of the sheep to explore matter, light and form in a resolutely modern and poetic style. The boundary between figuration and abstraction dissolves, and the viewer is free to project his or her own interpretation onto it.
Laurent Bergues is a prize-winning French artist who has exhibited his paintings nationally and in Switzerland. For him, art is an adventure, the outcome of which he never knows until it is completed. Bergues believes that even the smallest aspects of the creative process are at the service of efficiency. His semi-figurative compositions are painted using acrylics, pastels, and graphite on canvas or cardboard.
