About this artwork
The overlooked and commonplace Stinging Nettle is, in the eyes of Lawrence, a very misunderstood and under appreciated plant. Nettles are usually found in the places where few people go, it is their natural environment. These environments are the same places where he is also drawn to, to investigate what people are doing in places off the beaten track. In this piece the artist created a wall-mounted sculptural object which takes the form of a souvenir…
shirt, like one would buy on vacation or after visiting a tourist attraction, yet the imagery on it promotes a stinging weed.
The dimensions of the work include the wooden clothes hanger. If a collector wished to frame the work or put it behind glass it could be arranged.

« My work represents things in-between other things. I look at in-between landscapes, my process is in-between sculpture and drawing and the end results are between utilitarian products and "useless" art. »
Lawrence Bailey is a draftsman, textile artist, and sculptor based in the Netherlands whose works have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Latvia, the United Kingdom, and Spain. His art often explores elements of the landscape, as well as how people use or relate to it. In particular, Baile investigates "the Edge Lands", which signifies an environment that forms a border between the urban and the rural. For him, these spaces signify transition and change.
