About this artwork
Avalon, the mythical land of Arthurian legend is presented here as some derelict waste-ground full of discarded artefacts and utilitarian structures. It is not everyones idea of a utopia, but it is a place many people on the fringes of society are drawn to, either out of desire or necessity.
In this monumental sized work, Lawrence uses the language and form of religious decoration, such as may be found in a church or chapel, but here he is calling… to a secular audience and inviting them into his own spiritual realm.

« My work represents things in-between other things. I look at in-between landscapes, my process is in-between sculpture and drawing and the end results are between utilitarian products and "useless" art. »
Lawrence Bailey is a draftsman, textile artist, and sculptor based in the Netherlands whose works have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Latvia, the United Kingdom, and Spain. His art often explores elements of the landscape, as well as how people use or relate to it. In particular, Baile investigates "the Edge Lands", which signifies an environment that forms a border between the urban and the rural. For him, these spaces signify transition and change.
