About this artwork
In a nod to Diego Velazquez's "Las Mineas," the artist is shown in a double self-portrait. The front image is a combination of real and unreal--the artist as caricature, whereas his reflected image is more real... and he paints one of his iconic shamans, which is a real painting but an imaginary portrait. And it all floats above a colorful abstract landscape. Food for thought.

« My paintings are symbolic representation of an alternate reality that exists only in my mind. »
Lawrence Lee is an established American artist whose works have featured in prizes, exhibitions and permanent collections throughout the United States. An avid reader, he became fascinated by a book about art in high school and never looked back, going on to obtain a degree in Fine Arts and a career as an art teacher. Now an accomplished painter, he composes works that contain first impressions of realism with highly stylized detail, causing each viewer to contemplate, second-guess and closely engage with every vibrant, imaginative painting.
