About this artwork
Self-portrait of my self swallowing a hammer and having already swallowed a gun and a knife. It is an anti-violence painting, a painting for the revolution for the rights of everyone and a peaceful world. I have this love for peace and revol against war and violence so I am shown swallowing violent objects. The sun/light shines on me in a dark world as it shines upon anyone with a good/important cause.
Leonor Vaz (or Dosia Kochanek) is a self-taught painter who has been painting since childhood and recently dedicated herself more seriously to her art. She embraces a contemporary, somewhat surrealist style, freely painting what she sees without reliance on prescribed techniques. Her work centers mostly on herself and her experiences with people, loss, love and hope - aiming to disrupt and challenge the viewer. Her art powerfully conveys personal storytelling and her nuanced perspectives on life’s most intimate moments. The theme of death is mostly always present, and of course her experience with psychosis. From a young age she was haunted with thanatophobia and has overcome it with her faith in God. There's a light and darkness always present in her paintings, where her mind rests, in between one and the other.
