About this artwork
In this work, I wanted to capture the exact moment when one is lost in the fog of existence. The portrait I've drawn has no clear contours to contain its essence, because it is completely consumed by uncertainty.
I replaced her hair with a rolled, smoking cigarette: no longer threads of life, but spirals of smoke that cloud her thoughts and direction. She is a woman in disarray, one who has lost her inner compass; she seems happy but isn't. I tried… to convey this disorientation through her large, round glasses: instead of revealing the world, they contain two dark spirals that reflect a circular, endless journey inward, toward that oblivion where there is no longer a distinction between light and shadow. It is a portrait of the weariness of those who no longer know which way to go, shrouded in a gray haze that is both mental and visual. The candor of the felt makes this work even more direct and free of frills.
