The volcano is a metaphor for the power relations and social structures that reorganise and change over long periods of time, similar to human value communities and nations. In contrast to short-lived events, the permanence of the volcano remains as a symbol of the long-term and eternal. The "Mosaic Etna" series ("Etna", "Etna Hands", "Etna Flowers I+II", "Etna Bodies" etc.) portrays… the beauty of the "good old earth“.

The German-Italian artist Lilli Messina was born in Offenbach in 1976. She studied German language and literature at the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe University in Frankfurt in 1995 and graduated in visual communication at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach in 2003. Today, the artist lives and works in Berlin as a writer, graphic artist and illustrator.
