Some things exist beneath the surface unseen, but always moving. Undercurrent explores the tension between what we reveal and what we carry quietly within us. Layers of movement, fractured marks, metallic tones and bursts of colour collide and overlap, creating a sense of energy that never fully settles. The sweeping forms suggest movement and release, while the darker lines… and textures hint at everything happening underneath. Not everything needs to be seen to be felt.

Lisa Smith is a South African-born, self-taught award-winning abstract artist currently based in Hokkaido, Japan. A former professional racehorse jockey, her lifelong connection with horses, movement and instinct continues to influence her artistic practice.
Working primarily in acrylics and oils, Lisa creates expressive, emotionally charged paintings exploring colour, movement, memory, identity and human experience. Her intuitive approach allows each work to evolve organically through vibrant colour, texture, gesture and emotion.
Her equine background brings a unique understanding of strength, sensitivity and movement to her art, with horses increasingly becoming an important part of her artistic language.
Lisa has exhibited internationally across Europe, Asia and the Middle East, including Venice, Milan, Dubai, Seoul and Japan. Her work has received international recognition, including the Leonardo da Vinci International Art Prize in Milan, and is held in collections worldwide.
