About this artwork
"Sad Lotus" is part of a series of paintings I created after my university stay in China in 1988. This trip was a true artistic revelation. There, I met several times a great artist, now deceased, whose work had a profound impact on me. Her way of representing lotuses, imbued with poetry and mystery, touched my heart. She managed to capture all the fragility of this emblematic Asian flower, and it is this sensitivity that I wanted to transcribe in… my own way.
With Sad Lotus, I sought to evoke an imperfect, almost melancholic vision of the lotus. I chose to paint on silk, in homage to traditional Chinese techniques. Although I did not use Indian ink, I worked delicately with oil, in an approach inspired by watercolor effects. This painting is for me a bridge between two worlds: the one I discovered in China and the one I carry within me.
« [I seek to] be free while accessing vulnerability, to call the viewer to that which is intangible. »
