About this artwork
With its long, contemplative gaze, this giraffe becomes an emblem of perspective — not merely in height but in the quiet, dignified way it inhabits its world. I paint it with gratitude for the creatures that shaped my early life in Namibia, and with a critical awareness of how easily such beings fade from global attention despite their ecological significance. The electric greens and blues surrounding the figure evoke a pulse, a living biome that… breathes with the animal. Through a blend of personal reverence and academic reflection, the work suggests that gratitude itself can be a decolonising practice — one that honours the agency of wildlife and challenges the hierarchies that determine whose lives matter. In a time of shrinking habitats and fractured ecosystems, this giraffe asks us to expand our sightlines, to look up, and to hold room for futures where coexistence is still possible.
Livia Schneider is a German-Namibian painter, installation, and multidisciplinary artist who works primarily in painting, printmaking, sculpture, and immersive installations—her practice shaped by formal art training in Cape Town and vibrant multicultural experiences in Berlin. She employs intuitive, process-driven techniques across organic forms and participatory structures, creating environments where materiality, repetition, and tactility invite introspection and reflection. Her artworks evoke deep feelings of connection, healing, and collective responsibility, encouraging viewers to experience art as a transformative, communal, and contemplative journey.
