The symmetry evokes ceremony, a visual chant carrying the histories of species overlooked and ecosystems threatened. This piece traces that tension, folding personal memory into an academic reflection on mortality, extinction, and the ethics of remembrance. To decolonise is to confront the violences that render certain lives grievable and others disposable. To conserve is to say that every life — animal, human, ancestral — deserves the dignity of ongoingness. Memento Mori becomes a gentle directive: remember, because forgetting is a luxury the earth can no longer afford.
