About this artwork
When I was traveling in Transylvania, I was completely captivated by the unique, peaceful, yet mysterious atmosphere of the Red Lake. The moment I saw the petrified tree trunks emerging from the water in such a hauntingly majestic way, I knew instantly that I had to capture this moment on canvas. In creating this painting, my goal was to faithfully recreate the monumental beauty of the landscape: the rocky peak of Mount Kis-Cohárd rising proudly…
in the background, the deep emerald green of the dense pine forests, and the reflection of the clear blue sky on the water's surface. As I held the brush, the mystical legend surrounding the place was constantly on my mind. According to local folklore, the lake was formed by a massive landslide that buried the entire valley. The myth says that the blood of the shepherds and a beautiful young girl named Eszter Fazekas, who were trapped beneath the mountain, stained the water red—giving the lake its tragic Hungarian name, "Killer Lake".
