About this artwork
Influenced by Mucha and Klimt, this collection of designs pays homage to the drawing tradition of the Art Nouveau movement as well as to the great fashion illustrations of the 60s to 80s. Each design has several highly symbolic elements: the circle, the metal, the flower :
-The circle, a geometric element. It represents the finite and infinite whole.
- Gold, Metal, chemical element. Gold, Sun. Gold represents the active principle, perfection.
… -The botanical element orchid, symbol of absolute beauty, embodies the myth of the ideal woman.
Based on Judith Butler's queer theory that gender is a social construct and not a biological inevitability, this work deals with the identity, appearance and construction of gender through this series. In "Gender Trouble", Judith Butler introduced her famous notion of gender as a performance. One cultural phenomenon that Judith Butler says exposes the performative nature of the genre is that of the drag queen.

Lorene Abfayer is a painter and draftsman based in France whose works have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Spain and the United Kingdom. Her pieces are imbued with reflections and the questioning of gender, inviting the contemplation of identity and the way in which we present it. As a protean artist, Abfayer's artistic practice is marked by the need for exploration and research. She most often creates using ink, colored pencils, watercolors, and dry pastels on paper.
