My Near and Far series of landscape paintings features close-ups of flora and fauna that one might encounter on a hike through the forest, and which I do often encounter as hiking is one of my favorite activities. I also create distant vista landscapes that I hope inspire sthe feeling of awe and escape from the everyday that I feel when I encounter them. I sketch outdoors, often in watercolor, then bring my photographs and sketches into the studio…
to paint large paintings from these on canvas. As always, I'm interested in creating the illusion of luminous light with compelling layered colors. This painting is titled Enlightened and is depicts a fall morning on one of my favorite walks where the fallen pine needles are four feet thick so everything is silent and becomes a peaceful escape.
