About this artwork
This work belongs to the Fluid Nature series and deals with the hydrodynamics of humpback whales and undulating profiles. At first glance, such fins do not look "aerodynamic" at all. The advantage of the wavy or notched profiles is that longitudinal eddies are generated in the flow, almost comparable to the "Görtler eddies", i.e. "eddy streets", which prevent the flow from detaching from the surface. this experimentally with his "wavy wings" using simple means.
But back to the painting: Iconographically, the picture is divided into graphic and painterly areas, almost like a patent, except that now alongside the illustrations there is painting - instead of the written description. Plotter applications of bumpy structures can be found in DE-102010023017.
