About this artwork
"When We Were Young" is a monumental portal to a luminous Mediterranean memory. In this vast composition, Olek distills the coast's expanse into horizontal bands of pure, unadulterated joy. Part of the Blinkered series, the work serves as a sensory record of a carefree past, where the warmth of the sun and the rhythm of the waves trigger a jumble of emotions from a distant summer. As a synesthete, the artist uses these "after-images" to fight the… constant rush and anxiety of the present, creating a space for breath and recovery.
The creation of such a large-scale piece is an emotional roller-coaster—a journey from the initial "great feeling" to moments of deep frustration and the urge to destroy the work. Olek paints during the night to avoid distractions, using music to stir the specific emotions he pours onto the linen. By building dozens of layers and then aggressively scraping them back, he reveals a hidden history beneath the surface.
« A cup of coffee should be plainly distinguishable from a cup of dirty water from brushes. »
