About this artwork
Painting is part of an ongoing “Boundary” series exploring different forms of personal boundaries and self-protection.
The raised hand gesture functions as a primitive territorial sign — not aggression for the sake of aggression, but a final line of defense of the self.
The work examines the moment when silence is no longer enough, and the body itself becomes a language of resistance. Through tension, gesture, and confrontation, the painting reflects… on the human need for psychological space and emotional autonomy.
“ Over time, viewers have often described my paintings as therapeutic. While I do not see art as a substitute for healing itself, I believe that an image can create a moment of emotional recognition - a quiet encounter with feelings, memories, or truths that may have been forgotten or overlooked. In this sense, painting becomes a space for reflection, self-compassion, and reconnection.” (Maria)
Maria Shtypuliak is a contemporary painter trained in Gdynia, Gdańsk and Kiev whose work explores inner identity, vulnerability, and quiet transformation through atmospheric figurative imagery and a quiet luxury aesthetic.
Using restrained palettes and symbolic spaces, she creates emotional worlds where viewers can recognize their own silence, longing, and inner strength.
