About this artwork
Shadow of Memory is a poetic contemplation of memories that reside not in the mind, but in the depths of the unconscious. Inspired by the fragility and persistence of memories—how they vanish, yet leave shadows behind—this piece explores the invisible traces that remain even after things fade.
Through the soft gradation of layered pigments and the raw texture of sand, the painting evokes the sensation of a memory resurfacing—delicate yet unresolved,… fleeting yet vivid. The left side, where light subtly emerges, symbolizes a spark of remembrance—a moment when something lost quietly returns to awareness.
This work visualizes the emotional residue left in the unconscious: memories not clearly remembered, but deeply felt. It invites the viewer to reflect on what we carry without knowing, and how the unseen continues to shape us.
Mai Mizuuchi is a Japanese contemporary artist based in Fukuoka, Japan. Working in acrylic on canvas, she creates abstract and semi-abstract paintings that explore memory, presence, and the traces left by time.
Influenced by Zen philosophy and Japanese aesthetics, Mai builds quiet surfaces through layered pigments, soft gradients, and subtle textures. Her palette often features gold and sepia tones—suggesting warmth, light, and a sense of reverence.
Her works invite a slow gaze and a moment of calm, offering gentle spaces for reflection and reconnection.
