About this artwork
This artwork is part of my Heroine Series, inspired by Mila Gojsalić — often referred to as the Croatian Jeanne d’Arc — a woman who embodies courage, sacrifice, and inner strength deeply rooted in Croatian cultural heritage.
Rather than portraying her as a distant historical figure, I approach her as a living presence — something I recognize within myself. The inspiration for this work is also deeply personal, as Mila Gojsalić comes from the same… Dalmatian region where I was born and raised.
Through this work, I explore the silent strength that women carry — often invisible, yet deeply present. The figure is not only Mila, but also a reflection of an inner state: dignity, resilience, and inner courage.
Color and gesture are used to build emotional intensity and atmosphere, creating a visual language that moves between tradition and contemporary expression. The traditional costume becomes more than a reference — it transforms into a bridge between past and present.
Maja Vukušić, a painter who started her artistic journey following a career in nursing and service in the Croatian War of Independence, works primarily in painting with a deeply personal, self-taught sensibility enhanced by workshops and masterclasses. Her expressive practice blends abstraction, expressionism, and impressionism, merging figurative representations—especially strong female figures and cultural symbols—with dynamic, textured backgrounds. She draws her viewers into narratives of resilience, vitality, and emotion, evoking the enduring beauty and strength found both in human experience and the Croatian landscape. Her art radiates affirmation, courage, and the celebration of life's persistence.
