About this artwork
Membrane Art (MA) is an aesthetic concept that I have been developing over the past twenty years. It starts with a loose, unframed membrane, where the surface geometry contributes… to creating distinct expressions and unfolding events. The curvatures mimic the natural world and contain multidimensional values. However, the idea is only complete when the membrane is unraveled and the results are revealed on the 2D picture plane. This creates the human visual experience, serving as a metaphor for how we perceive the world.
Oil on Belgian linen.

« Membrane Art is a doorway to endless possibilities. It’s heavily dependent upon the geometric surface which underpins it, and until it's unraveled, we are blind to all possible outcomes. »
This deep focus on limitation and altered perception stems from Koch's personal history, growing up with a profoundly deaf father and a deaf-blind mother. Within this practice, restriction is transformed into capability; the physical blind spots of the curved surface do not limit the work but forge entirely new ways to construct meaning. Ultimately, the finished flat surface acts as a permanent visual archive of the memory of the curve.
