In some ways, this image is a homage to 1960s photorealism, not least because of the subject matter, which I photographed in a retro diner in California. On another level, the title raises the very timely question of our dominant culture. America was a dominant culture for Europe for a long time, but what remains of it today? Perhaps only the iconic ketchup brands?
Otherwise, a picture with complex light and very difficult surfaces; as a painter,… you also want to have challenges...
and in the end, in its complexity, it becomes a quiet and beautiful moment!
Manfred Hönig, trained in physics and philosophy, creates impressive realistic works using acrylic, oil and watercolor techniques. He uses brushes and airbrushes to create spatial illusions that suggest authenticity and immerse the viewer in the subject, free of unnecessary embellishments. His art conveys a deep understanding of the transience of life, embedded in the dignity and aesthetics of the decay and beauty of nature.
