Venice is actually only poetic and timeless in the side streets and canals, away from the hustle and bustle of the few main streets. This is where the combination of silence and complexity that I strive for in my pictures emerges, beyond clichéd, kitschy representation. The first step to a good picture is a perfect composition. You have to work carefully when looking for the motif and the photo that forms the basis of the picture, you can optimize… further on the computer and when painting you suppress everything that is not relevant to the motif. This way the picture is not just a realistic depiction, but an essence of what you see!
The painting surface of the picture is a frame-stiffened wooden panel, repeatedly hand-primed with high-quality primer and wet-sanded.
Manfred Hönig, trained in physics and philosophy, creates impressive realistic works using acrylic, oil and watercolor techniques. He uses brushes and airbrushes to create spatial illusions that suggest authenticity and immerse the viewer in the subject, free of unnecessary embellishments. His art conveys a deep understanding of the transience of life, embedded in the dignity and aesthetics of the decay and beauty of nature.
