About this artwork
Atlantis – A Story of a Lost Utopia
When I painted Atlantis, I wasn’t just imagining a sunken city—I was feeling its pulse, its echoes through time. This piece is my interpretation of a world lost beneath the waves, a utopia that once thrived but now only lingers in memory and myth.
I worked with oil and egg tempera on linen, letting the delicate interplay of pastel tones and raw, structural abstraction shape the composition. Soft blues, deep reds,… and open white expanses create both a sense of nostalgia and an invitation to explore the unknown. The tension between architectural lines and organic movement mirrors the fragile dance between permanence and impermanence—just like Atlantis itself, teetering between history and legend.

“Art must hold space for what cannot be spoken.”
Manja McCade is a contemporary artist whose practice moves between abstraction, memory, and social awareness. Rooted in painting yet open to cross-disciplinary dialogue, her work explores presence, loss, and the pursuit of freedom. McCade’s process is intuitive and physical — color, gesture, and rhythm become her language.
Alongside her studio practice, she develops projects that question silence and visibility in political and emotional contexts, including Belmarsh Live, her long-term engagement with freedom of speech and justice.
Based in Dessau, Germany, McCade creates works that invite reflection — art as a space for truth, empathy, and transformation.
