About this artwork
“Mask Ball” began with a thought I often return to in the studio — how easily we wear masks in life. Not dramatic ones, but the subtle layers: the polite surface, the practiced answers, the quiet self-protection.
While painting, forms and gestures started appearing like figures at an imaginary masked ball — moving, swirling, revealing themselves and hiding again. Some strokes assert themselves boldly, others stay hesitant, unsure if they belong in… the light yet.
This work holds that moment of transition — where identity shifts, masks loosen, and truth begins to show through. It isn’t about tearing anything away violently, but about gently allowing what’s real to surface.
For me, this painting celebrates the courage to let the mask slip, not for the world’s approval, but for our own honesty. It marks the beginning of deeper presence — where authenticity feels like both a risk and a quiet relief.

“Art must hold space for what cannot be spoken.”
Manja McCade is a contemporary artist whose practice moves between abstraction, memory, and social awareness. Rooted in painting yet open to cross-disciplinary dialogue, her work explores presence, loss, and the pursuit of freedom. McCade’s process is intuitive and physical — color, gesture, and rhythm become her language.
Alongside her studio practice, she develops projects that question silence and visibility in political and emotional contexts, including Belmarsh Live, her long-term engagement with freedom of speech and justice.
Based in Dessau, Germany, McCade creates works that invite reflection — art as a space for truth, empathy, and transformation.
