About this artwork
City explores the intimate contradictions of urban life the tension between light and shadow, presence and absence. Handcrafted from plaster of Paris, the sculptural forms reconstruct an urban landscape that shapes how we experience the city.
Shadows appear no matter how the light falls, and it is within these shadows that the work’s subtle magic resides. Viewed from the sides, the space expands, and the interplay of shadow and reality blurs, creating… a dynamic, ever shifting perception of the urban environment.
City invites the viewer to linger in these ambiguities, to reflect on the balance of structure and spontaneity, and to recognise the hidden poetry that emerges when light, shadow, and human presence converge.

Manuel Ursprung is a German-born, British-based artist whose sculptural reliefs trace an arc from delicate plaster imprints to more tactile, transformative works in latex.
