About this artwork
Maze explores the tension between perception, judgement, and the ways we navigate the scrutiny of others and ourselves. Handcrafted from wood and layered with plaster of Paris, the three-dimensional forms create a labyrinth of surfaces and passages, each irregular and deliberate, reflecting the complexity of human thought and social interaction.
The work confronts the anxiety of being watched, judged, and of constantly adjusting the self to fit… unseen expectations. The maze becomes a mirror for the internal negotiation of what to reveal or conceal, and how our own perceptions shape the reality we inhabit. It challenges us to see with empathy, to question assumptions, and to recognise the distortion between observation and understanding.
Maze invites the viewer to move through that uncertainty, to sit with discomfort, and to explore what it might mean to see others and ourselves without judgement, embracing the freedom that emerges when the walls of expectation begin to dissolve.
