In "Slope of the Vines" from the "Landscapes" series, I let the landscape speak for itself in its original colors – the earthy green tones were particularly important to me because they don't embellish anything, but rather convey the atmosphere of the place. I'm interested in the quiet interplay of the structures: the densely branched fruit tree in the foreground, the rows of vines that rhythmically divide the slope, the grassy line that stretches… upwards, and the stonework that holds the space. Stones, edges, climbing greenery – all of this bears the marks of labor, time, and weathering.
The gaze follows the rising line like a path without a destination: into the topography, into a structure of order and growth, of arrangement and wilderness. The intensity arises from precision, from the measure and resistance of things. By observing rather than overpowering, the apparent idyll transforms into a precise reading of surface, boundary, and duration—a place that reveals itself through its surfaces and forms.
Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolors in tertiary colors.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
