About this artwork
While on a first trip to Varanasi in India, I witnessed the cremation pyres on the banks of the river Ganges. One of the seven holy cities in India and all of the flames are lit from hot coals taken from the eternal fire which burns continuously under an arch. This fire has been kept a light by the same family for, reputedly, thousands of years.
The compositional slabs and construction of the painting are reminiscent of the timbers used in the construction… of the cremation pyres.
A time of celebration as well as sadness as any Hindu who dies and is cremated in Varanasi escapes the eternal wheel of rebirth and attains spiritual liberation.
I wanted the loose and painterly quality and application of the paint to express this ensuing freedom.
Marcus Hodge works primarily in oil, drawing from classical training in Spain and deep inspiration from India. His technique is vibrant and sculptural, with bold textures, abstract forms, and direct, minimal language, using unconventional tools to introduce risk and vitality. He seeks to balance energy and stillness, inviting instinctive responses while exploring the universal threads connecting humanity. Each piece radiates hope, faith and a profound sense of shared experience, urging viewers to embrace the unexpected and fostering unity in an increasingly divided world.
