In Diosa Negra. Visionones II, María Cortés reimagines the iconic Menina as a contemporary superheroine embodied as a Black goddess from— a figure of strength, protection and inner light. Drawing from the historical silhouette of Velázquez’s Meninas, the work transforms a classical reference into a powerful feminine archetype.
Set within a radiant landscape of vibrant colour and symbolic nature, the figure appears as both presence and guardian. The… simplified form and bold chromatic contrasts create a timeless icon where history, myth and contemporary identity converge.
A horizontal figure eight — the symbol of infinity — appears within the composition, inspired by the motif found in the robe of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Throughout the Superheroines Meninas series, Cortés adopts this sign as her signature gesture, integrating it into each painting as a mark of continuity, protection and renewal.
