About this artwork
The series of paintings "American Gods" is an attempt to discover a fleeting atmosphere of transcendence in portraits of people close to me. The starting point for my exploration and the main inspiration for this series is Neil Gaiman's novel of the same name. It addresses the issue of the passing of religious cults and traditions in a contemporary world dominated by new technologies and media. I wanted to capture this particular atmosphere of fading…

Radical rationalism and the displacement of the sacred from the cultural sphere of the First World are an inevitable consequence of scientific development, economic growth, consumerism, and so on. However, it leaves behind a certain sense of ontological emptiness, a deficit, or simply a longing for mystery. In my paintings, I trace the remnants of what remains mysterious in reality.
