About this artwork
Each of my artworks begins with an initial impulse – a color, a movement, or a structure.
From there, an open dialogue develops between intuition, material, and perception.
Layer by layer, each image develops its own character and gradually reveals what wants to become visible within it.
What fascinates me most about the creative process to this day is not the finished picture. It's the moment when trust is established.
It replaces the mind,… and from a small impulse something arises that I myself did not know before.
In SELF DISCOVERY 23, several layers of color, pigments and small basalt stones combine to create a multi-layered, almost three-dimensional surface.
Different gold tones as well as accents of copper and silver appear differently depending on the angle of the light, constantly revealing new effects.
Color nuances and light reflections become visible.
The artwork's depth of 4 centimeters gives the different levels additional space.

For Maria Weigt, the creative process is a continuous dialogue with the present moment. Her works spring from pure intuition and a deep trust in the creative flow. The artist understands the canvas as a space of absolute freedom, in which every movement is guided by the rhythm of the "now."
Layer by layer, works emerge that are not planned, but discovered. Color, structure, and material react to one another, shift their direction, and leave traces of their own development. Often, the true meaning of a painting only becomes apparent later. For Maria Weigt, this is precisely where the special power of painting lies: in not knowing, in trust, and in the moment when something becomes visible that previously had no words. Her works open spaces for resonance—for movement and stillness, tension and depth, the familiar and the unknown. They leave room for what is set in motion within the viewer themselves.
