« We, as artists, must act as a mirror to society. We have a responsibility, in all we do, to constantly work against oppression, discrimination and conflict. »
Marius van Niekerk is a painter, filmmaker and activist that grew up in South Africa during the apartheid conflicts. As a result of his anti-war activism, he was driven to exile in Europe and Scandanavia. Van Niekerkart’s art is inspired by his childhood experiences dealing with war and conflict. His work echos the central themes of the human dilemma, the human stain, the burden of violence and the search for identity. His abstract-expressionistic pieces are composed of distorted forms and bright colours.
