A man stands smoking in the market that operated around the shopping center. This formed part of my series titled simply 'Elephant', the abbreviated name given to the area.
The Heygate Estate was an imposing housing estate in Elephant and Castle, South London for some 40 years, and home to more than 3000 people. When built in the late 1970’s they were considered aspirational urban living for the early residents. But as the decades passed the area… developed a reputation for crime and poverty. The last resident moved out in 2013 and a year later they were demolished to make way for redevelopment under the name Elephant Park.
