About this artwork
One can find the constraints of a grid to be confining or freeing depending on your viewpoint. To me having a structure to play with is fun, much like improvising over a 12-bar blues form in music. Sometimes slight shifts in color or placement can have big effects on the feeling of the painting. Here, I’ve reduced my scene to the barest minimum, the rising sun and its reflection over the ocean. rows like bricks and dividing some into smaller parts I’ve tried to keep some movement and interest in the composition. It’s interesting to see how colors interact and affect each other in these larger blocks, and I feel like the light and color still convey the sensation of dawn at the coast. I’m naming this 48” x 48” oil painting “Eos” after the Greek goddess of the dawn.
