About this artwork
One day while driving home with my teenaged son after school we passed a tanning salon. When he asked I explained about tanning beds and he laughed. He said it seems silly to pay someone to lay on a bunch of lightbulbs to get a tan when sunshine outside is free. I'd been drawing a few alligators lately and suddenly had a flash of an alligator sprawled out in a tanning bed complete with sunglasses. It reminded me a bit of the old lotion commercials…
with a crocodile as the symbol of dry skin. Planet Tan received an Honorable Mention in the 2018 TASIMJE juried by Christopher Troutman.
