About this artwork
“Laguna” combines photography, painting and space into a three-dimensional work.
The starting point is two photographic images of the same Venetian scene, taken at different focal points. On the canvas in the background, the focus is on Venice itself, while the balustrade in the foreground remains blurred. On the canvas in the foreground, the focus is reversed: here, the balustrade stands out sharply and is further enhanced by acrylic paint and… three-dimensional textures.
A section of the foreground canvas offers a view of Venice beyond. Parts of the photographic motifs are continued and reworked in a painterly manner, so that photography and painting intertwine, as do foreground and background.
Depending on the perspective, the interplay between the two planes changes. A photographically captured moment becomes an image that opens up into the surrounding space.

Marta Widowitz, trained in art history and applied arts, uses photography and acrylic painting in her works. Her technique is unique; she prints photographs on canvas and then adds a new dimension of depth and texture using acrylic, metallic acrylic, and texture paste. This process creates a play of light and shadow, making the image appear sometimes like a photograph, sometimes like a painting. Her works, inspired by travel and everyday moments, convey a sense of change and movement.
