About this artwork
Guardian of Heritage is a striking mixed-media artwork that honors African identity and spiritual strength. Crafted over seven months, this piece features a regal female figure rendered in oil atop African fabric, her attire enriched with a collage of vibrant textiles, and her wings formed from delicate false feathers.
She stands as a guardian—graceful, grounded, and elevated by tradition. Every material is chosen with intent, from the textured cloth… to the palette foundation, symbolizing the fusion of ancestral memory and contemporary expression.
Marthe Ngandu, known as MagstoneSoulArt, is a self-taught painter from the Congo who works primarily with acrylics, oils, and collaged African fabrics such as Liputa and Ankara. She weaves bold colors and vibrant materials into her mixed-media portraits, merging tradition and modernity while dressing her subjects in dynamic patterns. Her art radiates joy, resilience, and the beauty of African women and children, inspiring viewers to see themselves as unique, elegant, and deeply treasured.
