About this artwork
power is me celebrates African beauty, heritage, and transformation. Painted directly onto African textile—as both canvas and cultural foundation—the figure radiates elegance in her Liputa collaged dress, crowned with a floral motif and finished with shimmering oil accents added in 2024.
Created over a month in 2020, this mixed-media piece blends softness and strength, honoring feminine identity through metallic tones, bold geometry, and a tactile… presence. It’s a visual rhythm of grace, rooted in tradition and reimagined through modern technique.
This artwork is a tribute to African women, created to honor Women’s Day in South Africa on August 9th. The flower in her hair symbolizes the delicate yet formidable strength and resilience of women. The vibrant African fabric embodies my Congolese heritage, a reminder that no matter where I am, I remain connected to my roots—colorful, exotic, and beautiful.
Marthe Ngandu, known as MagstoneSoulArt, is a self-taught painter from the Congo who works primarily with acrylics, oils, and collaged African fabrics such as Liputa and Ankara. She weaves bold colors and vibrant materials into her mixed-media portraits, merging tradition and modernity while dressing her subjects in dynamic patterns. Her art radiates joy, resilience, and the beauty of African women and children, inspiring viewers to see themselves as unique, elegant, and deeply treasured.
