Inspired by the quiet depth of the Caspian Sea, this stone sculpture brings together hand‑carved form and mirror inlay. Introducing a second material is part of my ongoing exploration of technique, allowing the work to shift between solidity and reflection. The Black‑Eyed Fish offer a calm focal point, while the mirrored fragments across its body respond to light and movement.
The contrast between stone and reflective surfaces… creates a subtle dialogue between permanence and fluidity. As the mirrors return fragments of the environment, the sculpture becomes gently interactive, inviting the viewer into a moment of reflection and transformation.
Maryam Shaban is an Iranian artist with a background in painting, graphic design, photography, and stone sculpture, educated in visual arts at the University of Arts. She works primarily with marble and river stones, using direct, subtractive carving and hand tools to create evocative figurative and abstract pieces that honor the organic form of her materials. Her style merges raw natural textures with precise craftsmanship, revealing transformative human emotions and the profound coexistence of strength and vulnerability. Shaban’s sculptures exude healing, transcendence, and the enduring memory of nature, inviting viewers to rediscover their own creative spirit.
