About this artwork
From the Paper Series, this painting represents Korean singer Cho Deok Bae. Having recently discovered his music and his world, I wanted to paint his portrait, a bit like an admirer would do for one of his idols.
The word "IRRELEVANT" which gives the canvas its title is used as a questioning, which we can see cynical or humorous, on the vain side of our work and our lives on a larger scale.
Irrelevant, 2021, mixed media on paper, 65 x 50 cm.

« Intimacy is the goal, the subject and the language. Movement is the key. »
Through his bright, evocative portraits, French artist Mathieu Bernard-Martin captures the notion that art is attached to a moment of time, and that art is created from urgency and necessity. He believes the artist's mission is to remind us that art cannot be grasped. Working with acrylics on canvas, he creates intimate portraits of characters who he states exist at many different levels, with each painting revealing several dimensions.
