About this artwork
"Show me your real face, before you are born" asks a Zen master in a koan. A friend sent me this sentence which haunted me for months, like a secret and unfazed call. I tried to answer it in painting with a series of works entitled “Anonymous Self-portraits”. I know. It seems a contradiction. But how else to name works that try to portray the unknown in me? The strangeness that sometimes springs from my skin? This inexplicable me who pushes me to…
do unpredictable things and which led Rimbaud, for his part, to write "I is another"? In this series of self-portraits, the resemblance has been thrown out as an outdated convention. I become a pictorial experiment. Everything is a matter of outpouring; from the speed of brush strokes to splashes. Perhaps identity is nothing more than what remains when the storm of passion has passed? Consuming all flesh? No. Identity is the storm itself.
