About this artwork
Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and politician. After escaping slavery, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement, being noted for his incisive oratorical skills and hard-hitting anti-slavery writings. He was described as the living rebuttal of the slave owner argument that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to act as independent American citizens. Douglass was a strong advocate…
for equality between all blacks, Native Americans, recent immigrants, women (he supported women's suffrage). He firmly believed in dialogue. When criticized for trading with slave owners, he responded with this famous phrase: "I would be ready to unite with anyone to do good and with no one to do bad." »It takes 2-3 weeks
