About this artwork
As often, the presence of the mirror questions the reality by reflecting it. Where is the real? Here or there behind? The mirror is also the place where the painter can slip from reality and use arbitrary colors.

« The real subject of my paintings is the contemplation of simple things to which the light of northern Belgium brings a wisp of nostalgia. »
Mathieu Weemaels is a contemporary Belgian artist who draws his inspiration from famous abstract painters such Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, and Kandinsky. Each painting begins with the application of dry pastels which the artist makes himself and which he loves for their softness and their lightness. Next, he applies oil colors onto the canvas in a complicated process of layering whereby he develops depth and the overarching composition of the work.
