About this artwork
This is the third in a series on St.Francis. The previous two were inspired Hindemith’s Nobilissima Visione, but this one, although related to St.Francis Preaching to the Birds by Giotto, is not the image that I envisioned during that performance. It is rather a further exploration of the subject. Materials used are wire, wire mesh, wire fencing, engraved plexiglass, acrylic paint, on oil painted wood.

Matt Cohen is an accomplished oil painter with a BFA from the School of Visual Art in NYC and an MA from UMass Amherst, who also teaches art history. He fuses modernist painting with experimental techniques, integrating wire mesh, plexiglass, and drawings to create layered assemblages. His style combines references to masterworks with intuitive explorations of process, revealing the visible history of decision-making. Cohen’s work radiates an intricate sense of time’s flow, evoking profound introspection about presence, memory, and the emotional resonance of personal history.
