About this artwork
This is an original oil painting of the Hawaiian surfer and legend Eddie Aikau. Eddie first became known as a big wave surfer in Hawaii in the early days of the sport, being one of the few Hawaiian natives to dominate in the sport. He then became the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay. It was a particularly dangerous beach, where Eddie saved hundreds of lives. He then became a legend when a boat he was on capsized in rough seas several miles off Oahu.…
No distress call could be made. Eddie used his surfboard, which he brought with him, to paddle back to get help for the group that was left stranded in the ocean. He was never seen again. The group was saved anyway, but they would never forget that Eddie was willing to risk his life for them.... "Eddie Would Go" became the words that would embody his bravery and sacrifice!
